Mere Proms concert hits the right note for celebration!

On Saturday 13th July The Friends of Mere Church hosted a Proms concert for the Mere community.  The reason to celebrate was the completed restoration of St Michael’s wonderful medieval church tower.

Over 400 people crowded into the Churchyard to listen to the 26 players of The Shrewton Silver Band play classics from the film Brassed Off as well as movie themes and all the well-loved songs from the Last Night of the Proms.

In August 2023 the National Lottery Heritage Fund awarded The Friends of St Michael’s Church £247,000 to undertake two programmes of work.  The first was to restore the church pinnacles, the gilded pennants and the face of the church clock.  The second, to undertake a series of practical and creative events to involve and enrich the Mere community through its heritage.  These are known as The Tower Stories. The Proms in Mere was the first Tower Stories event which will continue through until June 2025.

As well as the enormous generosity of the national lottery players, Mere is also indebted to the generosity of the Garfield Weston Foundation, The Fudge Trust, The Wiltshire Historic Churches Trust and donations from the Friends of St Michael’s church.
